More Than a Jacket
Derby of San Francisco is more than a jacket—it’s a piece of the city’s history.
What started as workwear became a symbol of identity, culture, and community across generations.
Built in San Francisco (Since 1963)
Founded in 1963 by William Ross, Derby was created as a durable, functional jacket for the working class.
By the 1970s and 1980s, it had grown far beyond that—sold in major retailers like JCPenney and local shops alike, becoming a staple across the country.
A Jacket That Became the City
In San Francisco, Derby became something more.
Worn by laborers, artists, lowrider clubs, sports fans, and everyday locals—it reflected the people who wore it.
“It wasn’t just a jacket for us—it was a part of being young, being working-class, being in the city.”
Over time, it evolved into a personal statement. Businesses adopted it, and individuals customized theirs with embroidery—making every jacket unique.
You’ll still see it today on Muni drivers, firefighters, and locals who carry that same hardworking spirit.
Signature Derby
Clean silhouette. Rugged construction. Paisley lining.
The look hasn’t changed—because it doesn’t need to.
Gone, But Not Forgotten
When the San Francisco factory closed in the late 1980s, Derby faded—but never disappeared from the city’s culture.
The Revival (2010)
Victor Suarez, an Iraq War veteran with deep roots in San Francisco, brought Derby back.
“This is a part of San Francisco history that’s been missing for 20 years.”
“It’s iconic like sourdough, crabs, the Golden Gate Bridge—the Derby.”
He didn’t just revive the brand—he restored its meaning.
“It’s not just tough guys now. It’s everyone’s jacket.”
Reopened on Haight Street, Derby became a family-run business grounded in authenticity, community, and pride.
Carried Forward
After Victor’s passing in 2019, his wife Jeannine and their four sons continue the legacy—keeping the brand true to its roots while moving it forward.
